Max Verstappen has given his first interview since welcoming a baby girl earlier this week. His girlfriend of five years, Kelly Piquet, gave birth to their daughter Lily, the couple announced on Friday morning.
The Red Bull driver skipped media duties in Miami and landed in the States late Thursday night ahead of practice.
“Luckily, I got to spend a few days with them once she was born,” he told ESPN. “It’s been great. You never really know what to expect but it’s been very enjoyable and very special.”
When asked whether he’s been researching to prepare for his new role as a girl dad, the four-time world champion said he’s already helped parent Piquet’s daughter Penelope.
“I’m kind of like a bonus dad already with my girlfriend having a daughter, so I saw her grow up since she was one,” he said of the five-year-old, whom she shares with ex-boyfriend, former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat. Verstappen also revealed whether he’ll continue to spend time gaming as his dad duties ramp up.
“I think that will work out. Who knows, maybe in the future we can do it together. Everyone does it [parenting] in their own way … it will all work out.” Verstappen’s comments come just a few hours after the couple confirmed Lily’s birth in an Instagram post.
“Welcome to the world, sweet Lily. Our hearts are fuller than ever – you are our greatest gift. We love you so much,” the pair wrote, alongside a sweet snap of the trio in the hospital.
