Mexico Grand Prix extends F1 contract until at least 2028

Formula 1 has signed a fresh three-year contract extension with promoters of the Mexico Grand Prix to keep the race on the calendar until 2028.

The 2025 edition of the race at Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is the last one of its current contract, with promotor CIE having to negotiate new terms with F1.

The race, which was revived in 2015, has grown into one of the most popular events on the calendar, with last year’s edition drawing a record weekend total of 405,000 spectators to the circuit.

In the wake of home hero Sergio Perez’s departure from Red Bull and F1, the organisers had always been confident interest in the event would remain high enough to commit to a new deal.

That has now happened, with promoters continuing to receive government backing to keep its event running for at least three more years under the current moniker of Mexico City Grand Prix, signing a deal for 2026, 2027 and 2028.

“We are very excited to announce that the Mexico GP will be held for three more years,” said Alejandro Soberon, the president and CEO of CIE.

“We are deeply grateful for the invaluable support of the Government of Mexico City, from the Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, to our President, Claudia Sheinbaum, as well as Stefano Domenicali from Formula 1, who have made it possible to continue bringing Formula 1 to our country.

“This not only contributes to the economic development of Mexico City, but also promotes our city, as well as our country, in a significant way worldwide.

“Together, we will continue to work hard to ensure that fans get the most out of an event that offers a unique live entertainment experience, and which for almost 10 years has shown the world the quality of the events we organise in this city.”

F1 CEO Domenicali added: “We are very excited to announce that the Mexico City Grand Prix will continue to be part of our calendar through the 2028 season.

“Formula 1 is energy, passion and emotion, and every year the unique atmosphere created by our fans in Mexico City is one of the most incredible and energetic experiences of our championship.”

Last year’s grand prix was marked by a fierce battle between title protagonists Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, with Carlos Sainz snaring his final win for Ferrari in emphatic fashion.

The 2025 event is scheduled for Sunday 26 October as the second part of a double-header with Austin’s United States Grand Prix, with the following Brazilian Grand Prix now a standalone event.
