Nico Rosberg sees himself in ‘amazing’ 2025 F1 star, ‘we’re very comparable’

Nico Rosberg had one of the hardest careers in F1 when he went up against Lewis Hamilton in the same team at Mercedes.

Mercedes emerged as the team to beat at the start of the hybrid era in 2014, but it was not until the 2016 season that Rosberg finally won the title.

Hamilton was the more consistent driver out of the pair, but Rosberg needed to figure out ways to beat him, with it often turning into a bitter intra-team rivalry between the pair.

Rosberg once said he had to force Hamilton “into mistakes” at the height of their rivalry, while the pair also suffered their fair share of collisions on track.

Discussing this period on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Rosberg drew comparisons to the current situation faced by Lando Norris at McLaren after his crash with Oscar Piastri in the Canadian Grand Prix.

Nico Rosberg says he is ‘very comparable’ with Lando Norris

The collision between Norris and Piastri was almost expected by McLaren given how close they are in the title race, but Norris drew a line under the saga by admitting fault instantly over team radio.

Rosberg believes Norris is now experiencing the same mental block as him, having himself experienced it during his battles with Hamilton.

“In Lando’s case specifically, I’ve been through exactly what he’s been through. We’re very comparable, and I turned it around successfully because I won in the end,” said Rosberg.

“So I’m really so well-positioned to be able to discuss something like that, and that’s the only reason I reached out and told him that I’m available.”

Nico Rosberg outlines why Lando Norris’s crash in Canadian GP was ‘so strange’

The collision between Norris and Piastri has been the main talking point from Canada, with George Russell feeling that the Briton went for a gap that didn’t exist.

Rosberg felt the same after watching it back and questions the judgement of Norris, having committed to the move.

“He did an amazing job in the race, but when it counted, he made a mistake, and it was just so strange, because to us, the overtake and that end result in the crash – there was no gap there,” said Rosberg.

“So it’s a bit strange to go full gas, pedal to the metal there in the first place.”

Comparisons were drawn to Hamilton’s infamous crash with Jenson Button at the same section of track, but Jolyon Palmer rightly pointed out that the seven-time world champion had his car alongside before the collision.
