Nico Rosberg thinks Lando Norris has now gained a ‘super powerful’ boost for his 2025 F1 title fight with Oscar Piastri

Lando Norris trails his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by three points in the drivers’ championship ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The Briton started the 2025 F1 season in the ideal way with victory from pole position at the Australian Grand Prix. But Piastri quickly grabbed the momentum from Norris by scoring four wins in the subsequent five Grands Prix to turn an early 23-point deficit into a 16-point lead.

Norris has now hit back, however, as the 25-year-old overtook Piastri to seal second place in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix before winning the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position. A mere three points now split the McLaren teammates ahead of the Spanish GP this weekend.

Nico Rosberg thinks Lando Norris’ Monaco GP pole position will be ‘huge’ in his title fight with Oscar Piastri

Piastri maintained his run of finishing on the podium at each of the past seven rounds at the Monaco GP with third place. But Nico Rosberg believes Norris winning the Monaco GP from pole last week will be a ‘super powerful’ boost for his confidence in their title fight this year.

Rosberg especially sees qualifying in Monaco as a big benefit after he beat Charles Leclerc to pole by 0.109 seconds. The 2016 F1 champion notes how the McLaren man often focuses on his faults, like when Norris called himself ‘clueless’ after qualifying P6 for the Bahrain GP.

Rosberg told Sky Sports F1 (30/05, 12:05): “I think it’s super powerful – especially for Lando, who’s always admitting that he doesn’t really believe in himself that much. I think it will be pretty huge.”

Lando Norris can regain the F1 championship lead from Oscar Piastri at the Spanish GP

Norris’ victory at the Monaco GP will no doubt have done the Briton’s confidence the world of good after watching Piastri claim control at McLaren and in the F1 drivers’ championship. He only took P2 at the Emilia Romagna GP to the Australian’s P3 due to McLaren’s strategy.

Now, the Bristol-born racer can regain the lead of the championship should he outscore the Melbourne native by four points. Piastri would remain ahead of Norris in the standings via countback of race wins if the latter only outscores the former by three points this Sunday.

Another race win may even be on the cards for Norris and Piastri at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, even if Red Bull and Ferrari believe the FIA’s flexi-front wing clampdown will hurt McLaren. The FIA cut the amount of vertical deflection allowed in static load tests by 5mm.
