McLaren started the 2024 season out as the third or fourth-fastest team and made a heroic comeback in the constructors’ championship fight.
They developed their car to a better standard than any of their rivals, represented best by their one-two in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
They carry the most momentum into the 2025 season and have a stable driver line-up which is more than can be said for Mercedes, Ferrari and likely Red Bull too.
McLaren’s invention of the papaya rules was a talking point earlier in the year, but if they are in contention again in the future, expect to hear more of them.

Oscar Piastri says Miami Grand Prix ‘surprised’ McLaren in 2024 season
McLaren came into the season off the back of their best year in over 10 years and with hopes of competing for the championship.
Red Bull’s fast start had them doubting whether it was possible, but they soon bounced back and delivered multiple victories.
To even be in contention to end a 16-year championship drought in Abu Dhabi was a success for them, but the main surprise of their season came much earlier on.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Oscar Piastri mentioned that their Miami Grand Prix performance was the biggest shock of the season for them.
“To be honest, the performance in Miami this year was a surprise from where we were last year. That was a nice glimpse of confidence.
“But then, once we went to a few different tracks with different characteristics, then we could back it up and be at a consistent level. Then I think we really started to believe that [we could win].”
Can either McLaren driver win the drivers’ title in 2025?
Lando Norris came up short in his pursuit of Max Verstappen in 2024 but was dealt a tricky hand in his charge to end Red Bull’s domination of the trophy.
With a car that competes from race one, on an even playing ground, they should be able to go the distance with their rivals.
They have the experience of being in a title fight now and know exactly what is required to beat Red Bull – sitting cosy with two drivers who have plenty of experience.

Watching out for Ferrari with a resurgent Lewis Hamilton will be important too, as he aims for a record eighth world championship.
But 2025 – the last year before the Formula 1 technical regulations change, should outline McLaren’s best chance in over 20 years for a title double.
