Peter Windsor tells Lando Norris to take inspiration from Kimi Antonelli after ‘silly’ Miami Grand Prix error

Lando Norris walked away from the Miami Grand Prix having fallen behind teammate Oscar Piastri by 16 points.

The Briton had a great start to the weekend when he lucked in with a Virtual Safety Car to win the Sprint race but in the Grand Prix, his battles with Max Verstappen cost him critical time to Piastri.

Norris came to blows with his title nemesis at the first corner, after Verstappen started from pole and retained the lead with a stern defence on the Briton.

Having lost ground, Norris came back through the field and found himself behind Verstappen again, fighting for second place. His McLaren engineer gave him coaching over team radio, telling him how Piastri overtook Verstappen.

Peter Windsor thinks Norris made one ‘silly’ mistake and felt he should have taken inspiration from Andrea Kimi Antonelli when speaking on his YouTube livestream.

Lando Norris should take inspiration from Kimi Antonelli after Max Verstappen battle

Norris attempted a move on Verstappen at Turn 11 but both drivers ran wide, with Norris going off track and emerging ahead.

It was clear that he should’ve given the place back, but it took a while before he did, eventually losing significant ground to Piastri.

Windsor thinks Norris should have taken inspiration from Kimi Antonelli, who had a similar move pulled on him in the Sprint race.

“It was obvious what Max was going to do, and regardless of that, the clue was to give the position back to Max going into the left-hander and passing him three laps later with DRS. It’s silly for Lando to be annoyed at Max because it shows that he just got it wrong and misjudged it,” said Windsor.

“Antonelli handled the situation better in the Sprint race when they just told him ‘No penalty’ after being overtaken by Piastri and he said ‘Ah, that’s good to know’ which is all Lando needed to say.”

Andrea Stella feels Lando Norris could’ve avoided Max Verstappen incident

Norris was quick off his grid box at the start of the race, having been eager to convert his front row start into a win.

Verstappen was bullish with his defence, knowing how important it is to be in clean air at the start of races to get the jump in the pit stops.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella felt Norris could have saved his first-lap attack for later in the race, knowing the risks it would pose.

Norris has now fallen behind Piastri in the Drivers’ Championship standings after starting off the year as the title favourite. For now, it seems he’s slipping further behind due to a lot of unforced errors.
