The Formula 1 world was stunned when Romain Grosjean suffered a horrific accident at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix.
The Frenchman escaped a fireball after his Haas car caught fire when it became lodged between the barriers following a collision with Daniil Kvyat.
Grosjean was able to escape the wreckage, but did suffer some burns. It was the last time he would ever drive a Formula 1 car in a competitive setting.
The Bahrain Grand Prix resumed and was eventually won by Lewis Hamilton, while the paddock was in relief regarding Grosjean’s great escape.
Since then he has raced in IndyCar, but has been replaced at Juncos Hollinger Racing for the 2025 season as they opted for a younger alternative.
Grosjean doubted Haas’ team principal Ayaom Komatsu but was proven wrong after the team performed better than expected in 2024 and managed seventh in the constructors’ championship.

Romain Grosjean admits Mercedes F1 test will go ahead after Toto Wolff discussions
In the aftermath of the accident, Grosjean was offered a test in a Mercedes car by the team’s boss Toto Wolff.
The Frenchman agreed to take his ex-rival up on the offer, but nearly five years on, despite a seat fit, they haven’t conducted any running.
Grosjean has now offered an update on it, and revealed whether or not it is going ahead to the F1 Nation podcast.
“We have [spoken to Toto Wolff] and I’m going to be honest it’s on my side, it’s my fault. I just haven’t found the time recently to do that and to plan it properly,” he said.
“I think we had everything setup in 2021, but Covid didn’t really help. Actually, right behind me is the helmet ready for the test with the Mercedes logo on it. I have everything ready, we just haven’t found a date. It’s been pretty busy in the US.
“Personally, I try to keep it as well as long as I can because I think it would be cool to try a car that I haven’t necessarily known. Maybe I’m keeping it for my 40th birthday, which comes next year as a present for myself.”

How has Romain Grosjean performed since he left Formula 1?
Since leaving Formula 1 at the end of 2020, Grosjean has enjoyed a mixed bag of results. Despite showing some very impressive pace, he failed to take an IndyCar victory.
He did manage three pole positions and six podiums, but never finished higher than 13th in the drivers’ championship.
The famous Andretti team even had him within their ranks for two seasons, but inconsistency plagued his stint.
Nowadays, he races for Lamborghini in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, as well as backing up PREMA’s IndyCar drivers as a reserve.
It seems that his best days may be behind him, and that it may be time to book the Mercedes test as a present for his 40th birthday…
