Ted Kravitz says one F1 driver was a ‘genius’ this season despite failing to finish on the podium

The Formula 1 season this year saw a very competitive championship, with four teams taking multiple victories.

McLaren stormed to their first Constructors’ Championship since 1998, while Max Verstappen won the drivers’ title for the fourth consecutive season.

Ferrari were quick and just missed the title by 14 points. They may point to a double retirement in Canada and Carlos Sainz’s crash with Sergio Perez in Azerbaijan as moments that cost them the title.

Fine margins such as this were costly, but both teams critically had two drivers who could consistently fight at the front. This helped them challenge for the title throughout the season.

Despite a lot of impressive performances across the grid, Ted Kravitz singled out one driver in particular who drove superbly despite not scoring a podium finish.

Fernando Alonso was much quicker than his teammate Lance Stroll over the season, leading the team’s push to fifth in the Constructors’ Championship.

Aston Martin started the season well, and the Spaniard finished fifth in Saudi Arabia after qualifying in fourth place. Alonso was also competitive at the Japanese Grand Prix, driving to sixth place ahead of both Mercedes drivers.

The British team didn’t score a podium all season and fell behind Haas and Alpine in terms of pace towards the end of the year. Alonso was significantly quicker than Lance Stroll this year and contributed to most of the team’s points.

Kravitz feels Alonso’s consistent drives to the top 10, and the points are a big part of why Aston Martin took fifth in the Constructors’ Championship.

He said on the Sky Sports F1 podcast: “I can’t say that they’re disappointing when the genius of Alonso in knocking in the performances he did to get them, secure them fifth in the constructors, is not… that’s not disappointing, is it? I mean, that’s incredible.

“Just in terms of points. They haven’t dropped any in the constructors. And that’s down to Fernando, and, I suppose, Lance as well.”

Aston Martin needs to improve with Adrian Newey onboard next season

Aston Martin had a frustrating season this year as they stumbled to fifth in the championship, the same position they finished last year.

Alonso eagerly anticipates Adrian Newey joining Aston Martin as the designer will look to develop the car heading into 2026.

Newey is starting work in 2025 after a successful stint at Red Bull, where he won championships and many races.

The British team have a lot of work to do to catch McLaren at the front of the field, but Alonso feels signing Newey and building the new factory are good signs.
