Ted Kravitz spotted Jack Doohan being ‘consoled’ at the Miami Grand Prix as Alpine consider Franco Colapinto switch

Alpine driver Jack Doohan might have run out of time to prove he has what it takes to be a Formula 1 driver.

The Miami Grand Prix marked the quarter-way mark in the 2025 Formula 1 season and Australian Oscar Piastri has established an impressive lead in the drivers’ championship.

However, Piastri’s fellow Australian Jack Doohan had another race weekend to forget.

Aside from his strong performance during qualifying where he finished ahead of Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, Doohan had three tough competitive sessions.

RANK DRIVER TEAM POINTS
1 Oscar Piastri McLaren 25
2 Lando Norris McLaren 18
3 George Russell Mercedes 15
4 Max Verstappen Red Bull 12
5 Alex Albon Williams 10
6 Kimi Antonelli Mercedes 8
7 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 6
8 Lewis Hamilton Ferrari 4
9 Carlos Sainz Williams 2
10 Yuki Tsunoda Red Bull 1

He went out in Q1 in Sprint qualifying after a strategical error from the team and crossed the finish line last in Saturday’s race, only saved by Max Verstappen’s penalty that demoted him to the back of the pack.

Doohan appeared to have a decent chance of stealing a point on Sunday starting just two rows behind the top 10.

However, before he had exited the first sequence of corners, his race was already over.

Contact with Liam Lawson caused terminal damage, and F1 Oversteer understands Alpine are considering dropping Doohan ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Ted Kravitz spotted Jack Doohan being ‘consoled’ at the Miami Grand Prix

Flavio Briatore suggested Franco Colapinto would be Alpine’s reserve driver in Imola, but that may no longer be the case.

Alongside Colapinto, Alpine are considering promoting Paul Aron, although Doohan’s struggles might make them reluctant to trust another rookie in that role.

Ted Kravitz was reporting from the Miami paddock on Ted’s Notebook (5/5 0:35 am) and speaking about Doohan’s ‘delicate’ future, he revealed, “Alpine, no points for them either, but Jack Doohan was very disappointed because Jack only lasted half a lap.

“He had an incident with a Toro Rosso and then a puncture and then damage from the Racing Bulls.

“And that was him out, I’ve just seen him in the paddock actually being consoled by his dad.

“His place is delicate enough within the team even though Franco Colapinto and the threat of him seems to be gone, but you never know.

“He needed to try and score a point this weekend again and hasn’t, but then again neither has Pierre Gasly.

The key role Jack Doohan played in Pierre Gasly’s Miami Grand Prix

Doohan has impressed Alpine both in his role as reserve driver and in his full-time race seat, but not enough to score points, or potentially extend his stay on the grid.

However, in Miami, Gasly didn’t have the easiest time either, and Kravitz shared the role Doohan played in getting him up to speed.

He said, “Gasly from the pit lane because he changed his suspension back to much more like Doohan’s set-up.

“One thing that Doohan’s doing is good set-up changes to optimise the car.

“And Pierre Gasly felt that the direction he’s taken was much worse than what Doohan was doing, and so he did what Doohan was doing and got his set-up.

“So, that’s something that Jack Doohan is doing correctly.”

Ultimately, helping out his more experienced teammate is a role he can play from the sidelines even if he’s not in the car.

If that’s the biggest contribution Alpine feel Doohan is making, then giving Colapinto his second F1 debut in less than 12 months may end up being the correct decision.
