The one area Red Bull dominated McLaren and Ferrari this season despite Constructors’ Championship woes

Red Bull may have missed out on the Constructors’ Championship this year, but there was another area they managed to demonstrate remarkable teamwork.

The Milton Keynes squad started off the year where they left off in their dominant 2023 season, winning four of the first five races in the season.

While Verstappen clinched wins in Canada and Imola, rival teams McLaren and Ferrari began to catch up and their advantage from the last two years appeared to be slashed.

Coupled with the downturn of Sergio Perez’s form, Red Bull lost the lead of the Constructors’ Championship in the second half of the season and was confined to third after the race in Las Vegas.

Even though they could not make it three in a row, Red Bull still showed they can dominate in one area that other teams have failed to match them on over the years.

Red Bull produced fastest pit stops of 2024 season

Every year the award for fastest pit stop is handed to the team that has consistently produced the quickest pit stops in a race.

Since the award has been introduced in 2015, Red Bull has won it seven times and is effectively unbeaten since the 2018 season.

This year Red Bull produced seven of the fastest pit stops, with the quickest being 1.9 seconds at the Chinese Grand Prix

Only McLaren managed to match them at this years Mexican GP, when they also produced a 1.9 second stop for Oscar Piastri. Ferrari managed to get two quick pit stops in the top ten, with their 1.94 second stop in Miami for Charles Leclerc being the fourth fastest.

Red Bull pit stop chief to leave team for Sauber in 2025

Red Bull’s pit stops are a product of sporting director Jonathan Wheatley, who has worked over the years to improve the choreography.

This includes positioning of mechanics, the way they take the wheels on and off the car, and the type of jacks used to lift the car off the ground.

“Seven victories in the Fastest Pit Stop Award are a testament to our entire team’s exceptional consistency and precision. Every pit stop is a perfectly choreographed demonstration of teamwork,” said Wheatley.

Wheatley will be leaving Red Bull at the end of the year to join Sauber as team principal, which is undoubtedly going to be a key area they can exploit, having had some of the worst pit stops all year.
