The stat that shows Fernando Alonso ‘practically’ matched Max Verstappen during 2024 F1 season

Fernando Alonso is the oldest driver on the Formula 1 grid and is still battling for his third world championship.

The Spaniard is 43 years old and trying to lead Aston Martin to the front after spending multiple seasons in the midfield.

Alonso was significantly quicker than his teammate Lance Stroll at Aston Martin but didn’t score a podium as Mike Krack’s outfit lagged behind the top four this year.

The British team endured a frustrating season, which means four-time world champion Max Verstappen has no interest in signing for Aston Martin.

Alonso has driven at a very high level throughout his career but has often lacked the cars to match his talent, as he suffered difficult spells at McLaren and Alpine previously.

A stat shows that the double world champion had a superb season behind the wheel, even if Aston Martin couldn’t fight at the front.

Alonso was much quicker than his teammate this season, and Stroll made a series of lacklustre errors that cost him and the team points.

Verstappen was a lot faster than his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, as the Dutchman scored 74.2% of the team’s Constructors’ Championship points.

Alonso was equally dominant over Stroll at Aston Martin. The Spaniard scored 70 of the team’s championship total of 94 points over the 24 rounds.

This equates to a 74.4% advantage for Alonso, who consistently scored points and was the team’s lead driver.

Antonio Lobato explained on Soy Motor that this stat shows Alonso was driving at the same level as Verstappen over the season.

He said: “Max Verstappen’s percentage before the last race was 74.2% of Red Bull’s points, and Fernando, a race ago, had achieved 74.4%, which is practically the same.

“Then, if Verstappen is so good with a car that has fought for the championship to be at the top. Well, if you extrapolate it and see it in a team like Aston Martin, you also realise Fernando Alonso’s level of driving.”

This also highlights that the Canadian has been performing well below Alonso’s level, and Gian Carlo Minardi feels Aston Martin can’t keep Stroll much longer.

Aston Martin needs to improve next season ahead of 2026

Aston Martin took a step back this season and were uncompetitive in a straight line, much to Alonso’s frustration at the Qatar Grand Prix.

The British team will need to step forward next season as Adrian Newey joins the outfit before they prepare to take on a Honda works engine in 2026 amid the new regulations being introduced.

Alonso will enjoy Mercedes changing their rear axle ahead of next season. If it is a positive change for 2025, it will benefit Aston Martin with their Mercedes engine and gearbox.

The new rules could provide an opportunity for Aston Martin, but they need to learn how to win and deal with the pressure of racing at the front.
