Timo Glock cannot ‘understand’ what Lando Norris did before issuing his Canadian Grand Prix apology

Lando Norris was immediately on McLaren’s team radio to apologise after he retired from Sunday’s 2025 Canadian Grand Prix after crashing into teammate, Oscar Piastri.

The papaya pals and F1 drivers’ championship title rivals collided at the very end of the 66th of the 70 laps as Norris sought to overtake Piastri for fourth place in the Canadian GP. Norris instantly held his hands up to admit their crash was ‘all my fault’ after a ‘stupid’ move to try.

Norris also later added that he ‘misjudged’ his pass on Piastri, as the 25-year-old thought his teammate would take a different line down the pit straight which would have left a gap. The Briton ultimately rear-ended the 24-year-old as there was no space to slot his MCL39 into.

Lando Norris stunned Timo Glock by not backing out of his crash with Oscar Piastri in Canada

McLaren let their drivers fight on the circuit, and CEO Zak Brown expected Norris and Piastri would crash at some stage as they both fight to win their first drivers’ title. But how the two came together in the closing laps of last Sunday’s Canadian GP simply stunned Timo Glock.

Norris impressed some F1 fans by instantly apologising to McLaren after crashing into Piastri in Canada. But Glock cannot fathom why the Briton got into a position to create a crash that ended his day and also opened a 22-point margin between them atop the drivers’ standings.

Glock told Sky Germany: “He should have seen that earlier because Oscar goes to the left, making it clear where he wants to go. Lando simply drives into the back of his car. I find it difficult to understand why he does that.

“He should have either backed off or positioned himself more clearly beforehand. For him, this is obviously the worst-case scenario in this situation as far as the world championship is concerned.”

What penalty did Lando Norris receive for his crash with Oscar Piastri in Canada?

Like Glock, Nico Rosberg found it ‘strange’ Norris did not lift off before hitting Piastri as the Briton stayed fully on the throttle despite the Australian making it clear that he was covering the inside line for Turn 1. Norris could easily have gone to Piastri’s right and avoided a crash.

Norris even drew a five-second time penalty as the stewards ruled he caused a collision with Piastri in the Canadian GP. Yet as the Bristol-born ace completed more than 90% of the race, he was classified P18. So, Norris’ penalty does not convert to a grid drop for the Austrian GP.

Yet while the six-time F1 Grand Prix winner escaped a grid penalty for the Austrian GP, Glock thinks Norris faces a much more ‘uncomfortable’ issue within McLaren. The ex-Toyota driver believes Norris has increased the chances that McLaren will favour Piastri with team orders.

Glock added: “Norris is very shaken and knows exactly what that means now. The danger will come at some point because Verstappen is always there, scoring points. Russell also scores points very consistently.

“That’s why McLaren will have learned from last year. At some point, the team orders will come. And if Piastri’s lead over Norris is large enough, then he will find himself in this uncomfortable position. And he, himself, made a big step towards that today.”
