What happened to Logan Sargeant after being replaced by Franco Colapinto as Jack Doohan loses Alpine F1 seat

Franco Colapinto has returned to an F1 race seat as he replaces Jack Doohan at Alpine after six races of the 2025 season.

The Argentine will step into the A525 from the next race at Imola. Colapinto is set to take part in the next five Grand Prix before Alpine have another assessment at the British Grand Prix.

The 21-year-old has been patiently waiting on the sidelines for an opportunity at the Enstone outfit. He signed a long-term contract as a reserve driver over the winter from Williams, applying pressure on Doohan to perform.

After six races in 2025, the Aussie failed to score points. While the pace to his teammate Pierre Gasly was encouraging – he outqualified him for the first time in Miami – several accidents hampered his progression.

Flavio Briatore had a ‘good argument’ to replace Doohan as his crashes proved costly to Alpine. After his retirement in Miami and Oliver Oakes’ resignation as team principal, the writing was on the wall for the 22-year-old.

Now, Colapinto will be afforded a chance to prove himself, albeit for another short period. He was given the final nine races of the 2024 season when he replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams.

Logan Sargeant was replaced by Franco Colapinto mid-season at Williams in 2024

Signing with the Grove outfit in 2023, Sargeant had a difficult time in F1. He scored just one point in his rookie season, while teammate Alex Albon outqualified him in every Grand Prix and scored 27 points.

Despite his lack-lustre performances and several crashes, Williams opted to retain the American for 2024 and give him a second chance to perform. If anything, he got much worse.

In his 15 races in 2024, Sargeant registered a best finish of 14th in Jeddah. The 24-year-old did not patch up his mistakes from the year prior, with his heavy crash at Zandvoort being the final straw.

Williams staff looked ‘fed up’ with Sargeant as they had recently brought a new upgrade to the car, which was almost immediately destroyed in his crash. Team principal James Vowles sacked the American after the race weekend, promoting then-F2 talent Colapinto to F1.

The Argentine proved to be an immediate improvement as he managed to get the best from Williams’ new update. Finishing 12th on debut from P18 on the grid at Monza, Colapinto went on to score five points in the final nine races, four more than Sargeant managed in 27 more Grand Prix.

Logan Sargeant pulled out of the 2025 ELMS campaign before the first race

After his axe from Williams, many were under the illusion that it marked the end of Sargeant’s F1 career. Since then, the American has been dabbling in other categories.

IndyCar seemed the obvious destination for the 24-year-old and he was seen at numerous race weekends in 2024 and having discussions with teams over a potential seat for 2025.

With limited options available on the grid, Sargeant missed out on a seat in IndyCar for this season. He quickly turned his attention to sports car racing, signing for IDEC Sport in the European Le Mans Series for 2025.

Sargeant’s move delighted racing fans as they were ‘so excited’ to see him get back behind the wheel of a car. However, before the season started, the American withdrew from the ELMS campaign.

Sargeant did not elaborate on any specific reasons for his departure, other than he wanted to ‘pursue other interests.’ The 24-year-old is set to take a break from racing, with his return date currently unknown.
