What Isack Hadjar has said about Anthony Hamilton as he prepares to take on FIA young driver role

Anthony Hamilton, father of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, is set to take on a role at motorsport’s governing body, the FIA.

The move will see Hamilton move into an official role within the FIA, according to The Times, after spending the past 18 months in an advisory capacity as a part of their Young Driver Development Pathway (YDDP).

The official launch of the YDDP programme is set to take place at the FIA Conference in Macau in June, which will be jointly presented by Hamilton and Ben Sulayem.

The report claims that Hamilton is said to be impressed with Ben Sulayem, which led to discussions around an official role within the governing body. It also follows on from praise made by Isack Hadjar, after his moment during the Australian Grand Prix.

Isack Hadjar calls Anthony Hamilton a ‘really classy’ guy

Hadjar crashed out on the formation lap in the wet conditions, forcing him out of the race before it had even begun on his debut.

He cut a dejected figure when he walked back to the paddock, but was stopped by Hamilton who offered him support. At the following race in China, Hadjar offered some words of praise when speaking to F1.com and reflected on the special moment.

“He said it reminded him of Lewis parking the car in the pit entry in Shanghai,” said Hadjar.

“It was a nice moment, sharing time with someone like Anthony, the dad of my idol. It was quite a special moment. Lewis sent me a message later that day, so they’re really classy guys.”

Anthony Hamilton’s support comes at crucial time for Mohammed Ben Sulayem

Hamilton’s support comes ahead of the FIA Presidential elections in December, where Ben Sulayem could face some opposition.

Carlos Sainz Sr is weighing up a potential campaign to oppose Ben Sulayem and potentially become the first person to win the presidency against an incumbent since Max Mosley did against Jean-Marie Balestre.

Ben Sulayem is said to be considering changes to the FIA statutes to prevent anyone from opposing him at the upcoming elections, according to BBC Sport, despite the entry criteria to run already being difficult to meet.

The support from Hamilton is a significant victory for Ben Sulayem, especially after his son Lewis who has been critical of the FIA President.

Hamilton’s father used to be his manager in the early years of his F1 career before the pair separated in 2010. He has since attended races as a family member, having been seen in the Ferrari garage this season.
