22-pole F1 driver told to ‘get out of here’ and give up his race seat ahead of 2025 season

The chaos of the 2024 driver market has produced 10 transfers for the 2025 F1 season.

After seeing no changes to the driver line-ups at the start of 2024 – the first that happened in F1 history – Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari opened the door for multiple movements around the paddock.

Six new full-time drivers will join the grid in 2025 while only two teams have kept their driver pairings the same from last season.

McLaren were not in a position to change their drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The duo create arguably the most exciting partnership in 2025 as they look to challenge for the driver’s championship – after winning the Woking-based outfit the constructors’ title for the first time since 1998 last year.

The other team not to change their drivers from 2024 is Aston Martin. The Silverstone-based team are opted for continuity in Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll ahead of the new technical regulations in 2026.

Aston Martin fell behind in 2024 compared to the year prior. Alonso grabbed eight podiums and finished fourth in 2023, but could only manage 70 points last year while Stroll scored 24.

At 43 years old, Alonso’s two-year contract with Aston Martin will likely be his last in F1. Ther Silverstone-based outfit are building an exciting project behind the scenes that could put the Spaniard in a position fight for a third championship.

But Tom Coronel thinks Alonso’s ‘time is over’ as he predicts him to be 2025’s biggest disappointment. Motorsport.com Nederland, the Dutch pundit thinks the 43-year-old – who has 22 pole positions and 32 wins across 401 race starts – should give up his race seat.

When asked who his pick for the biggest disappointment of 2025 is, Coronel said: “Alonso. It’s a shame but you know, there is a time to come and a time to go.

“And yes with Alonso, I think you’re cool, I think you’re a topper, a racer through and through, he always goes for it with full dedication.

“This is a real racing driver that I look at and that I think but I also say about that man, you know what? Make way. Get out of here, go.

“You’ve made your money, you know take a different role in motorsport because that is real. Take the sporting side, go coach drivers. I know that he is behind Bortoleto.

“You know, try to make something beautiful out of that but your time is over and by the way, has been for a long time. What are you still doing [here?]

“In terms of name and that kind of stuff, respect, great, cool. But you do not belong there anymore and you know that. So give that seat to someone else”.

What are Fernando Alonso’s title chances in 2026?

With not much expected to change in 2025 in terms of performance, Aston Martin will be focusing their attention on 2026 and a new era for F1.

The Silverstone-based outfit managed to finish fifth in 2024 but regressed significantly in performance. However, come 2026, ‘everyone’ is backing Aston Martin to lead the way.

The arrival of Adrian Newey in the second quarter of 2025 will be massive for the team’s prospects in the new regulations. Alonso refused to call 2024 a ‘bad year’ because of the signing of Newey – who is looking to build the team to success like he achieved with Red Bull.

Peter Windsor says fans cannot write off Alonso and Aston Martin under Newey’s guidance. If the legendary engineer can ace the new regulations, the Spaniard could be a serious contender for the championship.
