26-point driver tells Cadillac he’s ‘ready’ for 2026 call-up despite 13-year absence from F1

Cadillac are just one year away from taking to the Formula 1 grid as the sport’s 11th team.

The American brand are set to join the grid in 2026 after General Motors took over the failed Andretti bid and struck a deal with F1.

The team are hoping to bring their own power unit to F1 by 2028. Cadillac will run Ferrari engines in their first two years in the sport as the new technical regulations come into effect in 2026.

Despite their arrival not being for another 14 months, speculation is rife as to who the team’s first two drivers will be.

Mario Andretti wants to have an American driver at Cadillac – there currently is none on the grid after Logan Sargeant was sacked by Williams in 2024. He also wants an experienced driver to go alongside the young American talent.

And one driver has thrown his hat in the ring for a potential seat with the team next year – and it is a name F1 has not seen for over a decade.

Vitantonio Liuzzi says he is ‘ready’ for Cadillac call-up in 2026

Vitantonio Liuzzi began his F1 career at Red Bull in 2005 after winning the Formula 3000 title the year prior. Liuzzi had left Helmut Marko ‘super excited’ during testing in the same way Max Verstappen did as he showed his desire to go flat out despite spinning in the session.

The Italian drove just four times with the Milton Keynes-based outfit in 2005 – sharing the second seat with Christian Klien – before moving to Red Bull’s newly bought junior team Toro Rosso in 2006.

Liuzzi spent two years with the Faenza outfit before losing his seat in 2008. He went on to join Force India midway through 2009 and later Hispania in 2011, before leaving F1 at the end of that year.

Now 44 years old and having not raced in the sport in 13 years, the Italian claims he is ‘ready’ for Cadillac in 2026, saying that he even wanted to send his CV to the team.

“I’m open. Actually I wanted to send my CV, If you can help me out with Andretti!” he told the Inside Line F1 Podcast.

“I’m still ready. I’m like Hulkenberg, that was always jumping into teams and now he’s settled. I’m ready, the hunger is still there.”

Which other F1 drivers could race for Cadillac in 2026?

It would be a sensational return for Liuzzi if he was to get a chance with Cadillac not just in F1 but in motorsport in general. The Italian has not competed in any category since 2017.

Liuzzi does have a track record of helping set up new teams in F1, given his time with Red Bull and Toro Rosso. But Cadillac will have several options that are currently racing available to them.

Colton Herta has been heavily linked with the team given his connections to Andretti, while Sergio Perez is suspected to be joining Cadillac in 2026 after his departure from Red Bull.

There could be a chance that Ferrari will want one of their junior drivers at Cadillac with their engine deal for 2026 and 2027.

However, George Russell will likely reject Cadillac as he is ‘too optimistic’ for the team despite being out of contract at the end of this season with Mercedes.
