Alan Jones hits out at Lando Norris ‘nonsense’ in 2025 F1 title battle with Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri has established an advantage over McLaren teammate Lando Norris in 2025. The Aussie leads the championship heading into the Miami Grand Prix.

Piastri is the only driver to have won multiple Grand Prix this season, taking three victories in China, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. He leads the standings by 10 points over Norris, with Max Verstappen just another two points behind in third.

Having won the season opener from pole in Melbourne, many expected Norris to be the main challenger for the title. However, 2025’s first triple header exposed several weaknesses from the Brit, including qualifying mishaps in the last two races.

Norris admits he is not as ‘precise’ as he was in 2024, as errors in his qualifying runs and racecraft have put him on the back foot heading into Miami.

The MCL39 is a more difficult car to handle than its predecessor, but it is clear the tide has shifted at McLaren. Piastri ‘forcefully’ took number one status from Norris with his win in Jeddah, as the latter struggled to make his way through the traffic to finish fourth.

Norris says he’s put ‘too much pressure’ on himself to perform this year with the fastest car. He appears to be struggling mentally, and Alan Jones is not impressed with his approach.

Alan Jones hit out at Lando Norris ‘nonsense’ about his mental struggles against Oscar Piastri in 2025 title fight

Norris is notorious for being self-critical, with many instances of this already being shown in 2025. Speaking with Fox Sports Australia, the 1980 F1 world champion hit out at the 24-year-old’s ‘nonsense’ about his mental struggles.

Jones sees it as an advantage for Piastri in his bid to become the next Aussie world champion: “He can do it this year, no question. At the end of the day, his teammate’s weak,” he said.

“His teammate is quite quick and there’s no doubt about that. But I think mentally, I think he’s quite a weak person. He’s coming out with all this nonsense about, like he’s got a bit of a mental thing.

“He’s dwelling on some of the problems that he’s had rather than the positives. And when they start talking all that nonsense, you know you’ve got them.

“And Oscar is a pretty strong-minded young kid, I love him. He doesn’t show off, he doesn’t dance all over the place.

“He’s just a really good, strong individual and I think that’s exactly what we need to get the job done.”

Miami Grand Prix could offer an advantage to Lando Norris over Oscar Piastri

Heading to the US for the first time in 2025 this weekend, the gap between the McLaren drivers is minimal in terms of points. However, Piastri clearly has the upper hand mentally, which could play to be his strengths in Miami.

But after a week’s break from an intense triple header, Norris will be refreshed and ready to fight. Furthermore, he is heading to a track he has gone well at in the past.

Miami was the sight of the 24-year-old’s first F1 win, as he displayed great pace to pull away from Verstappen after the safety car. Norris has ‘always’ been fast at Miami, which should serve as a warning to Piastri.

Timo Glock says Norris must ‘deprive’ Piastri of extending his lead in the championship in Miami. The Brit cannot afford to drop more points this weekend as F1 heads to the European season shortly after.
