F1 driver who raced against Ayrton Senna pinpoints the big similarity with Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen has proven that he has just about every skill a Formula 1 driver needs to deliver complete domination over his rivals.

For four years the Dutchman has been untouchable, and in fact, he holds the record for the most days consecutively leading the championship.

It has been over two and a half years since anyone else other than him and his Red Bull car sat on top of the pile, just a few months into the current technical regulations.

2025 will represent a new challenge as he attempts to match Michael Schumacher’s run of five straight titles, but if anyone has proven they can deliver the impossible – it’s Verstappen.

Christian Danner compares Max Verstappen ability to Ayrton Senna

The 1980’s saw some of the best Formula 1 drivers of all time compete with each other, including Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg.

Senna’s name is often mentioned when discussing the greatest driver and drivers of all time – with his natural ability off the charts compared to many of his rivals.

Christian Danner raced against the Brazilian during some of his prime years and believes that there was one ability of his which is similar to Verstappen’s.

He told Motorsport-Magazin that both relentlessly attempt to find ways to improve and get better with every race that they compete in.

“I remember exactly that was the case with Senna, too,” he said. “He never stopped thinking about where he could get better, even though he was already the very best.

“I am sure that is also the case with Max Verstappen. This is a normal development that a driver has to go through, and he has to be open to it, be prepared and also take a look at himself.”

Is Verstappen better than Senna?

Some say it’s almost impossible to compare the different eras of motorsport, but there are also arguments against that.

While at the age of 27, seven years younger than Senna was after his career ceased due to a devastating accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix – Verstappen’s statistics are better.

In almost every category he leads the way, and what may be most impressive about this, is that he’s done it against stiffer competition.

There was no such thing as the 107% rule in the 20th century – the field was very spread out and often drivers in the top six got lapped.

Verstappen has had to face a tougher era for that, relying on his natural ability to come out on top, and that’s what arguably makes him greater than one of the greatest of all time.
