F1 podcast: Everything Austria told us about Verstappen vs Norris

Since McLaren’s emergence as the closest challenger to Red Bull in the 2024 Formula 1 season, it’s seemed inevitable that Lando Norris would have to go properly wheel-to-wheel with three-time champion Max Verstappen.

Now that that’s happened – with a disastrous outcome – what are the consequences for two drivers who until now have been good friends away from the track?

That’s the talk of this post-Austrian Grand Prix edition of The Race F1 Podcast, as Edd Straw is joined by Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell-Malm to discuss the fallout from Verstappen and Norris’s race-defining collision at the Red Bull Ring.

They pass judgement on the clash, as well as reflecting on both drivers’ racecraft during the weekend – considering Norris had left the door open for Verstappen to repass him in the sprint race – how the McLaren driver reacted to his first proper experience of Verstappen’s ruthlessness, and explain why the Red Bull driver was the far less aggrieved of the two following their incident.

In the midst of all that, there was a first Mercedes win for almost 18 months – so how did George Russell engineer himself into position to pick up the pieces and why was there such a disparity in the grand prix between him and team-mate Lewis Hamilton?

And of course, there was no shortage of questions from The Race Members’ Club, which you can also now join via Patreon.
