Ferrari fans believe one Fred Vasseur comment exposes his ‘loser mentality’ amid Lewis Hamilton woes

Fred Vasseur began the 2025 season in a position of strength. He’d just pulled off arguably the biggest driver move in F1 history, luring Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes.

Ferrari took the fight for the 2024 constructors’ title to the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi and ultimately finished just 14 points behind McLaren. They looked ready to end their drought.

But the team principal at Maranello faces a unique level of scrutiny. And after Ferrari’s 2025 package failed to meet expectations, Vasseur has inevitably come under pressure.

The team haven’t come close to winning any of the first nine races, scoring just three podiums. Both cars went out in Q2 at one of their home races in Imola.

While it’s still fairly early, the Hamilton move isn’t working out either. Winning with the Briton would be a commercial dream for the Scuderia, but losing feels even more consequential.

Fred Vasseur expresses pride at Ferrari climbing to second place, and fans aren’t happy

Speaking after the Spanish Grand Prix, where Leclerc finished third and Hamilton took sixth, Vasseur congratulated the team on climbing to second in the constructors’.

“I prefer to be second than fourth or fifth,” he said, pointing out that they had overhauled a significant gap to Mercedes since their double disqualification in China.

They were 40 behind the Silver Arrows, but they’re now six ahead. And they’ve also leapfrogged Red Bull.

However, one Ferrari fan on X said Vasseur’s comments were symptomatic of a ‘loser mentality’. Another scathingly asked, ‘Is this what Ferrari are content with?’.

Vasseur was told that Leclerc is ‘the only one with a winner mentality’, while he’s content ‘appreciating mediocrity’.

“There lies the problem, celebrating failure! LH should get out of there fast,” a fellow user added.

“Really nice bloke, but that’s the attitude of a loser, not a winner!” a final comment read.

David Croft questions Ferrari management after Lewis Hamilton issue in Spain

As many fans pointed out, Ferrari haven’t made progress on pure performance. Red Bull have been hampered by the ongoing struggles of their second driver, with Max Verstappen putting 137 of their 144 points on the board.

As for Mercedes, unreliability has intervened. Kimi Antonelli retired from the Emilia Romagna and Spanish GPs, while George Russell suffered a failure in Monaco qualifying.

Ferrari hoped for a ‘day of resurrection’ at the Spanish GP, predicting that the FIA’s flexi-wing clampdown would bring McLaren back into their sights. In the end, they couldn’t get close.

To compound their lack of speed, Ferrari have been accused of mismanagement at times this season. For instance, David Croft questioned why they took so long to swap Hamilton and the clearly faster Leclerc during the first stint in Barcelona.
