George Russell shares who he thinks was to blame in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri collision at the Canadian Grand Prix

The Canadian Grand Prix ended dramatically after the two McLarens collided while battling for fourth place, with Lando Norris crashing out.

Norris had closed the gap to Oscar Piastri in the closing stages of the race and attempted an overtake at Turn 10 on his teammate.

Piastri cut back and the pair went side-by-side down the backstraight heading into the Turn 13 and 14 chicane. Exiting the corner, Piastri was ahead but had compromised his exit, allowing Norris to stay close and in his slipstream.

As they came past the start/finish gantry, Norris collided with the rear of Piastri’s car. The impact took off his front wing and damaged his suspension, forcing him to stop and retire on the spot.

Reacting to the crash in the post-race cool-down room, George Russell and Max Verstappen gave their thoughts.

George Russell compares Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri clash to 2011 famous McLaren crash

Russell and Verstappen got a view of the crash after the race, with the Briton immediately drawing comparison to another famous McLaren clash from 2011 at the Montreal circuit.

Russell: “That’s literally like Lewis and Button in 2011. There was not really a gap there was there?”
Antonelli: “That was scary though.”
Russell: “Yeah.”
Verstappen: “They are lucky they had that wall there.”

Andrea Kimi Antonelli was directly ahead of the pair and was trying to decide who he wanted to give slipstream to, to preserve his podium: “I was a bit uncertain over who to give the slipstream to you know? I was like… left or right?”

Lando Norris drops to over 20 points behind Oscar Piastri

The collision between the two McLaren drivers now puts Piastri over 20 points ahead of Norris in the Drivers’ standings after he finished in P4.

Norris admitted it was his fault over team radio immediately after the collision, with the pair also seen shaking hands in the post-race media pen.

The Briton scored no points for the first time this season, with both McLaren’s also absent from the podium for the first time.

This is because Antonelli made a move at the start of the race on Piastri and secured third, with Mercedes outwitting McLaren in the pit stops.
