How Aston Martin feel about Fernando Alonso’s immediate Formula 1 future amid Max Verstappen interest

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso hasn’t had the start to the 2025 Formula 1 season that he would have liked.

After a campaign where Alonso was getting more and more frustrated, it’s been his teammate, Lance Stroll, who has delivered the points for Aston Martin this year.

Stroll is arguably having his best start to an F1 season, having already secured a P6 finish in Australia and then added two more points to his tally in China following the disqualification of both Ferraris.

In stark contrast, Alonso is the only driver who hasn’t finished a Grand Prix this year.

The 43-year-old Spaniard was one of six drivers who found the barriers in Melbourne, having an uncharacteristic crash in torrential conditions coming out of turn seven.

After the race, Alonso said: “I think the incident came from nowhere, to be honest.

“I was not wider than any other lap; I just found a lot of gravel stuck in the middle of the circuit, and I spun.”

Alonso then suffered a brake failure at the beginning of the race in China, leaving him point-less after the first two race weekends.

Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin future not in danger despite Max Verstappen interest

Alonso’s Aston Martin contract runs until the end of the 2026 season, when he’ll be 45 years old.

It’s hard to imagine that he’ll still be planning to race in Formula 1 beyond then, although stranger things have happened, and if Adrian Newey builds a championship-winning car, then the Spaniard will be desperate to stick around.

However, Aston Martin hold a significant interest in Max Verstappen as Lawrence Stroll has proven time and again that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to build the strongest possible setup to achieve his ultimate goal of winning a title.

Lance Stroll is unlikely to lose his seat, given his father’s position within the team, meaning that if Verstappen suddenly becomes available, Alonso is the man in danger.

A report from Motor.es has shared more details about Alonso’s current position within the team.

Aston Martin are impressed with Alonso’s commitment, suggesting that it’s ‘beyond question’, while they’re said to be ‘happy with him’.

Not only that, they believe that his ‘technical and tactical contribution’ is valued more than the feedback that would be available from nearly any other driver.

Alonso and Aston Martin have ‘no friction’ between them at the moment, despite back-to-back DNFs, especially as the second retirement was out of his control.

Aston Martin face inevitable ‘dilemma’ with Fernando Alonso

It’s important to note that Helmut Marko has ruled out following Verstappen to Aston Martin, which could end up playing a role in the Dutchman’s decision.

Verstappen stayed out of the disharmony that swirled around Red Bull last year until there were suggestions that Marko would leave, with his future at the team indirectly connected to the veteran Austrian’s.

However, Aston Martin know they need to prepare for life after Alonso sooner rather than later, even though it’s too soon to suggest that his performances have started to drop off.

The ‘dilemma’ they face is that no matter how hard he trains to stay in peak physical condition and to keep his reactions sharp, age will eventually catch up to him.

Ralf Schumacher thinks Alonso has lost some courage this year, based on what he’s seen so far this season.

The Spaniard will be keen to prove him wrong at the Japanese Grand Prix, a race he’s won once in his career, back in 2006, when Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli was just a few weeks old.
