Karun Chandhok congratulates the ‘Adrian Newey of commentary’ after big Martin Brundle news

Martin Brundle is one of the broadcasting mainstays in Formula 1 having been a commentator and pundit for the last 30 years.

The 65-year-old first made his TV debut in 1997 alongside Murray Walker and would later commentate alongside James Allen, Jonathan Legard and David Croft.

Brundle’s gridwalk has become a broadcasting phenomenon, which takes advantage of the preamble before the start of a Grand Prix and sees Brundle having to navigate a sea of celebrities, mechanics, and personnel in a bid to interview drivers before a race.

His efforts have been recognised in King Charles III’s 2025 New Year honours list, with Brundle being made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Taking to social media, his Sky Sports F1 colleague Karun Chandhok has offered his congratulations.

Karun Chandhok congratulates Martin Brundle on OBE

Brundle is one of the broadcasting legends in F1 due to his cutting analysis, which draws on his career as a former driver.

Having raced alongside Michael Schumacher at the same team, driven for great teams like McLaren, and going up against Ayrton Senna in his junior formula days, Brundle’s analysis has become second to none.

Chandhok referred to him as the ‘Adrian Newey of commentary’ due to his mix of colour and deep-rooted analysis.

“Huge congratulations to Martin Brundle,” wrote Chandhok.

“I often describe him as the “Adrian Newey of commentary” – worked through so many eras of the sport & always makes sure he’s absolutely at the forefront of knowledge, delivering 100% every time. Been an honour & pleasure to learn from him.”

Fans think Martin Brundle award is ‘long overdue’

Brundle has been awarded four times by BAFTA in 1998, 1999, 2005, and 2006 for his F1 commentary and three times by the Royal Television Society for his F1 punditry.

Fans took to social media to congratulate Brundle on his ‘well overdue’ award, something that Walker never received when he was alive.

Brundle said the one thing that ‘annoys’ him about the gridwalks is the blunders that can occur, stating that he would rather be well-known for calling a race correctly.

Lewis Hamilton does not talk to Brundle on the grid, making him one of the only drivers who does not do so because he would rather spend time with his engineers in the moments before a race start.
