Lance Stroll was reportedly furious after qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver was only 14th, while teammate Fernando Alonso reached Q3.
The word around the F1 paddock was that Stroll ‘lost his temper’ in the garage. He apparently broke equipment in the garage and swore at team staff.
Stroll would later withdraw from the race due to injury. He has recently been complaining of recurring pain in his hands and wrists after surgery in 2023.
The discomfort evidently became so severe in Barcelona that he couldn’t take part in the 66-lap Grand Prix. He’s subsequently undergone another procedure.
It’s unclear whether Stroll will be declared fit for his home race in Canada at the end of next week.
Lance Stroll ‘absolutely’ did not swear at Aston Martin mechanics at Spanish Grand Prix
Instagram account racing.news relayed the BBC’s story on Stroll. The driver’s no. 1 mechanic, Harry Rush, set the record straight in the comments.
“Swore at team members?” he wrote. “Absolutely not true.”
Stroll is the son of billionaire team owner Lawrence, which helps to shield him from internal scrutiny. It’s also worth noting that he’s scored 14 of Aston’s 16 points in 2025.
The Silverstone outfit’s chief trackside officer, Mike Krack, had already rejected the rumours, calling them ‘typical paddock gossip’.
Aston Martin communicated Lance Stroll injury news in an unusual way
A number of drivers have been touted as possible replacements should Stroll be unavailable for Canada. Theoretically, the next in line should be Felipe Drugovich, currently reserve driver.
Drugovich is ready to miss the Le Mans 24 Hours to race in Montreal, David Croft says. Valtteri Bottas has also been mentioned as a candidate.

But unlike Aston, McLaren have an agreement with Mercedes, their engine suppliers, that gives them access to Bottas as a reserve.
There are some murmurs that Aston Martin want an ‘excuse’ to drop Stroll amid their ongoing interest in Max Verstappen. But it’s still hard to envisage him losing his seat while his father is around.
