Lewis Hamilton has made a ‘very uncomfortable’ change this season that might explain his Ferrari woes

Lewis Hamilton’s woes at Ferrari continued at the Spanish Grand Prix as he struggled for performance all weekend.

The seven-time champion had some optimism heading into the race after outqualifying teammate Charles Leclerc, although the Monegasque driver was saving tyres for the Grand Prix.

Ferrari pinned hopes on the FIA’s flexi-wing technical directive to shake up the pecking order. But Hamilton was doubtful about its impact, having seen little difference on the simulator.

Sure enough, the Brit struggled for race pace, making way for Leclerc as the 27-year-old went on to claim his third podium of the season. Hamilton finished P6 after Max Verstappen was penalised for a collision with George Russell.

Further misery was piled onto the Ferrari driver as he was overtaken by Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg down the main straight in the closing laps. Some F1 fans feel there is ‘no coming back’ for Hamilton after being passed by the German as his misery in Maranello continues.

Lewis Hamilton has made a ‘very uncomfortable’ change to his driving style at Ferrari

Hamilton said the SF-25 was the ‘worst it’s ever been’ at the Spanish Grand Prix. The car lacked balance at the rear end as Hamilton suffered ‘snap oversteer’ more than any other driver.

Leclerc was ‘considerably ahead of Hamilton’ due to Ferrari not having provided a stable rear end for the race. While the team have moved to second in the constructors’ championship, the 40-year-old is now 23 points behind his teammate.

Hamilton is suffering a ‘chronic lack of confidence’ in the front end of the car. His struggles may be evident because of a change to his driving style since joining Ferrari.

Journalist Julianne Cerasoli says the Brit’s change is ‘very uncomfortable’ to him. Hamilton has never driven a non-Mercedes-powered car before 2025 – he is struggling to adapt to the Ferrari environment.

“What he’s been telling us is that he has been changing his driving style to a way that is very uncomfortable for him. So maybe he cannot keep it consistently throughout the whole race,” said Cerasoli via F1 Nation.

Lewis Hamilton has never been more downbeat about Ferrari

Hamilton ‘wiped tears’ after a miserable final stint in Barcelona as he failed to capitalise on the late safety car. He was completely dejected after the race and the most despondent he has been towards Ferrari since joining over the winter.

David Coulthard thinks Hamilton has ‘reasons to be positive’ at Ferrari as he matched Leclerc’s pace in the middle stint in Spain. However, he is not finding that speed consistently, with Leclerc moaning about Hamilton’s pace over the radio before being let past.

Hamilton is now going against Fred Vasseur and is demanding that Ferrari stop development on their 2025 car. The 40-year-old is ‘disillusioned’ with the current package and is banking on the 2026 F1 regulations to be competitive.

But Hamilton is suspicious that some Ferrari staff no longer support him, as his results have not been what the team were expecting. He may be considering his future after Hamilton stated he wanted to go ‘home’ after the Spanish GP.
