Mark Webber has noticed one Oscar Piastri trait that could be winding up Lando Norris behind the scenes at McLaren

Oscar Piastri has extended his championship lead after winning his fourth race of 2025 at the Miami Grand Prix ahead of Lando Norris.

The Australian overtook polesitter Max Verstappen in the opening stages of the race, after battling for a couple of laps with help from the DRS.

Verstappen emulated Michael Schumacher defending from Piastri, according to Martin Brundle, but fell short due to the Red Bull driver encountering a problem with the brakes with his RB21.

Piastri would go on to pressure Verstappen into outbraking himself into the first corner, taking the lead and building up an eight-second gap to teammate Lando Norris, who also overtook Verstappen in subsequent laps.

Norris will feel like the Miami GP was a missed opportunity, having started on the front row and won the Sprint race. He’s now over 20 points behind Piastri in the Drivers’ Championship, after the Australian won his fourth race of the season.

Behind the scenes, Tom Clarkson highlighted one thing Mark Webber told him about Piastri, which will likely make Norris’ losses even more frustrating when speaking on the F1 Nation podcast.

Oscar Piastri ‘monosyllabic’ nature will be ‘frustrating’ for Lando Norris

The Australian has a good support network around him at McLaren with his family and friends regularly attending races, and having the help of former F1 driver Mark Webber to lean on.

Piastri has also benefited from having a new trainer Arthur Simila, who was previously described as a ‘positive influence’ by Clarkson.

Webber highlighted something in the dynamic between the pair, which he thinks will impact the intra-team battle with Norris.

“I had a catch-up with Mark Webber and he said that Oscar and his trainer are so monosyllabic, that he doesn’t know what either of them is thinking at any time,” said Clarkson.

“I was thinking if I were Lando Norris, that might wind you up. Not knowing what your main rival is thinking at any moment would be frustrating.”

Oscar Piastri has now won more races at McLaren than Lando Norris

Having won his fourth race of the 2025 season, Piastri also reached another important milestone in his McLaren career.

The Australian has now won more races at McLaren than Norris, having achieved a total of six victories compared to Norris’ five.

2024 Dutch Grand Prix 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix
2025 Australian Grand Prix 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix
2025 Miami Grand Prix

It is an impressive feat considering Norris has been at the team since 2019, having only achieved his first victory at last years Miami Grand Prix.

Piastri surpassing his win tally this season puts him in serious contention for the title, especially considering he is now over 20 points ahead in the Drivers’ Championship.
