Martin Brundle made one eerily accurate prediction about Lewis Hamilton’s final race for Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton has said his final goodbyes to Mercedes and is now ramping up his preparations for his next chapter in Formula 1.

After winning six Drivers’ Championships and helping Mercedes win a further eight team titles, Lewis Hamilton is joining Ferrari in 2025.

Unusually, Hamilton announced his move to Ferrari ahead of the start of the season.

It means that the seven-time world champion has been on a farewell tour this year with the Brackley-based team, with each of the 24 races this season another chance for Hamilton to say goodbye.

Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari set off a chain reaction in the F1 driver’s market that will see four rookies on the grid in 2025 and only two teams – McLaren and Aston Martin – retaining both of their drivers.

The 39-year-old’s final year with Mercedes hasn’t gone as smoothly as he or the team would like.

Hamilton recorded his lowest-ever finish in the Drivers’ Championship but did end his nearly three-year wait to win a race at Silverstone.

Martin Brundle predicted at the beginning of the year about Hamilton’s move to Ferrari and how his final year at Mercedes might play out.

One call Brundle made about Hamilton’s final race for the team in Abu Dhabi was eerily accurate.

In an episode of the Sky Sports F1 Podcast from February 16th, Brundle said: “I have no doubt he will give it absolutely everything he’s got until the last lap of the last race in Abu Dhabi for Mercedes-Benz.

“He’ll be wearing those overalls, holding that steering wheel, representing one and a half thousand people.

“If everybody’s smart in that, and I think they are all very smart people, as you said, they’ve had such a wonderful relationship together, Hamilton, Mercedes-Benz, and Toto and the team.

“I think they’ll see it as a farewell tour. That’s how I think they should and will treat it. Then wish him farewell and hope that he loses in a Ferrari.”

Hamilton started the race in P16 after colliding with a bollard in Q1, forcing him to make his way through the pack on the Sunday.

He did brilliantly, and with one lap left, had teammate George Russell in his sights.

Nico Rosberg says Hamilton proved he got the better of Russell in Abu Dhabi by pulling off a brilliant move around the outside of Turn 9 to come home in fourth and win the overtall head-to-head against his teammate during their three seasons together.

Martin Brundle disagrees with who Mercedes have replaced Lewis Hamilton with in 2025

Mercedes decided to replace Hamilton with teenager Kimi Antonelli for the 2025 season after months of deliberating.

The Italian performed admirably in Formula 2 this year, but wasn’t on the same level as fellow F1 graduates Gabriel Bortoleto and Isack Hadjar.

Martin Brundle thinks its a travesty Mercedes didn’t sign Carlos Sainz who became a free agent when Hamilton took his seat at Ferrari.

The Spaniard has joined Williams and will hope they can take significant steps forward over the winter otherwise he’ll be going from competing for race wins to hoping he can score points.

For Hamilton, he’ll be very encouraged by how Ferrari ended 2024 and may want to thank Sainz for his work in developing the car this year.

All eyes are on whether the seven-time world champion will be in contention to add an eighth title to his CV in 2025.
