Martin Brundle says Lewis Hamilton has now done something at Ferrari which hasn’t ‘overly impressed’ Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton would have wanted to start the transition from Mercedes to Ferrari in a much more spectacular way than how the Australian Grand Prix unfolded.

Toto Wolff watched his two Mercedes drivers pull off a brilliant result that leaves them joint top of the constructors’ championship.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari struggled and a P8 and P10 finish leaves them sitting behind the likes of Williams and Aston Martin at this early stage of the season.

However, Hamilton won’t be too upset with how his first few months with the Scuderia has started.

Ferrari fans already adore Hamilton and have a strong belief that either he or teammate Charles Leclerc can deliver a much-coveted championship.

Hamilton is already learning Italian and despite being 40 years old and a seven-time world champion, looks more full of energy now than ever before.

Martin Brundle thinks Mercedes won’t enjoy how happy Lewis Hamilton looks at Ferrari

Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix and his first race for Ferrari, Martin Brundle was reflecting on his move on Sky Sports F1 (16/3 3:12 am).

Brundle previously admitted he’d never seen Hamilton look so happy and host Simon Lazenby agreed, believing Hamilton was ‘so excited’ about the move and that he’s got a ‘renewed spring in his step’.

Responding to this, Brundle said: “Yep, [it’s] the old adage a change is as good as a rest certainly applies here with Lewis, doesn’t it?

“He’s smiling ear to ear, has been pretty much since he joined the team and I don’t think Mercedes are overly impressed with the fact that he’s so happy to be somewhere else after all their glorious championship years together!

“But, anyway, Lewis is at Ferrari and we look forward to seeing him out there.”

Mercedes staff may not have been too encouraged by their former driver’s change in attitude since moving on.

However, they’ll feel that they’ve had the last laugh after George Russell finished on the podium in Melbourne and Andrea Kimi Antonelli was the best-performing driver racing for a new team on the grid.

Ferrari have issues to resolve with Lewis Hamilton heading into the Chinese Grand Prix

Although the wet conditions in Australia made Hamilton’s first race tricky, the Chinese Grand Prix offers a new opportunity for him and Leclerc to quickly turn a corner.

Every team has to update their rear wings after a new FIA directive and it’s yet to be seen which manufacturers will benefit and which will suffer.

However, Ferrari have several issues specific to them that must be resolved quickly if Hamilton or Leclerc are going to challenge for the championship.

Hamilton wasn’t happy with his radio communications with his new race engineer Riccardo Adami but that will quickly improve over time.

The car struggled in qualifying compared to the pace they showed in practice with both drivers beaten over one lap by Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon.

Hamilton was disappointed that Ferrari didn’t warn him about the final rain shower approaching and the team’s strategy was under the microscope after they pitted too late for intermediate tyres.

There are plenty of things that need to be ironed out over the coming race weekends but Mercedes will be watching on from a distance enjoying their much more positive start to 2025.
