Novak Djokovic felt like he was in ‘Disneyland’ after what George Russell showed him at Mercedes

Formula 1 teams are known for their high-tech equipment used to gather data from their race cars during Grand Prix weekends.

Data is a currency in F1 because of how restricted the teams are when it comes to track time, with a variety of sources used to generate data using sensors.

During a race weekend, there can be over 250 sensors on a car, with them mainly divided into three categories: control, instrumentation and monitoring. Engineers will usually pore over data to try and extra the last tenths of performance out of their cars.

Teams have been able to identify mistakes made during car setup, including Red Bull who used the data during the Dutch GP weekend to determine an issue with Max Verstappen’s car.

Tennis star Novak Djokovic was recently invited by George Russell into the Mercedes garage to see just how high-tech everything is in person.

Novak Djokovic was impressed by Mercedes technical setup

Djokovic has previously met with George Russell at Wimbledon and attended this years Qatar Grand Prix, where the Mercedes driver gave him a tour of their facilities.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion was impressed by how high-tech it was, describing the Mercedes facilities as ‘Disneyland’ when speaking during the Brisbane ATP press conference.

“It was super impressive to witness and experience Formula 1 with George Russell, who was very nice to give me a tour. Took me to their technical room to meet the data and tech team,” said Djokovic.

“I think it could be maybe 15 people that is working there on the computers, each person for a specific technical element.

“I mean, I felt like in Disneyland a little bit because I believe that there’s a lot of beneficial things that you can get out of the data.”

George Russell in list of biggest crashes of 2024 season

Data is used in crashes to determine things like the G-Force on impact and the speed at which a particular crash happened.

This is sent to the FIA Accident Database, which compiles accidents from every competition in world motorsport, and is used to help improve safety measures.

Russell was on the list of biggest crashes of the 2024 F1 season, owing to his impact into the barriers during practice for the Mexico City GP.

The impacted recorded 30 times the force of gravity when he hit the wall, leading to him having to visit the medical centre for a check over.
