Oliver Oakes makes three-word joke about his Alpine future after disappointing start to the 2025 F1 season

Alpine have not had the start to the 2025 Formula 1 season they would have expected. After three races, they are rock bottom of the constructors’ championship.

The Enstone-based team looked in a better position in pre-season than they were in 2024. Alpine had regressed massively from 2023 and were arguably the slowest team at the first race last year.

It took Esteban Ocon finishing P10 in Miami to score the team’s first points after six races. In 2025, Alpine have repeated their start to 2024 with zero points from the first three Grand Prix.

Pierre Gasly came close in Melbourne but narrowly missed out on points in P11 in the tricky conditions. He repeated that finish in Shanghai before he was disqualified for his car being overweight.

Teammate Jack Doohan, while he has been close to Gasly in pace, has struggled with numerous accidents. The Aussie is under pressure to keep his seat, with Flavio Briatore having a ‘good argument’ to drop Doohan as his crashes are proving costly to Alpine with the budget cap.

Franco Colapinto is putting the 22-year-old under pressure as he eyes a return to a full-time seat. But it is not just Doohan who is looking over his shoulders at Alpine.

Oliver Oakes makes a joke that he is ‘surviving until Spa’ at Alpine

Oliver Oakes took the role of team principal at Alpine after Bruno Famin left his post at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix.

Spa Francorchamps has not been a pleasant weekend for Alpine bosses in the past. Before Famin departed in 2024, Otmar Szafnauer famously left the team at the 2023 race after a falling out with Renault’s senior management.

Szafnauer felt Alpine had become ‘untrustworthy’ through various instances of mismanagement, particularly the handling of the Oscar Piastri situation. The Enstone outfit lost the Aussie to McLaren, with Szafnauer being put on the press release despite having nothing to do with it.

With his two predecessors leaving Alpine at the Belgian GP over the last two years, Oakes joked on the official F1 YouTube channel that he is ‘surviving until Spa’ in 2025.

Asked how he would describe this season in three words, the 37-year-old said: “Could joke and say: ‘Surviving until Spa.’ Bri’s high is two words, that was our DJ at the launch, I guess a bit [of] a mix of those. I’m going to get in trouble for that!”

Alpine are building an exciting project for the 2026 regulations

Oakes will want to stay on board at Alpine, especially given the work he has put in behind the scenes to prepare for the 2026 regulations.

Alpine will run with Mercedes engines come next season after deciding to shut down their Viry-Chatillon factory. Their move away from being a works team could be genius, particularly after their struggles at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Alpine’s decision to join Mercedes was justified as their Renault units once again held them back from scoring points at Suzuka. As a customer team in 2026, the Enstone squad could return to their previous heights.

Mercedes are set to have the best engine under the new regulations, creating an exciting project at Alpine in F1’s new era. The only question that needs answering is which drivers they will have for 2026.

Doohan is fighting for his future in the sport as Colapinto breathes down his neck with a long-term contract and more experience. Briatore is notorious for making brutal driver swaps mid-seaosn, and could do the same to the Aussie in 2025.
