Oscar Piastri bagged his second win of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the Bahrain Grand Prix last weekend. It was the most dominant performance of the year so far.
Piastri had to wait until last month for his first F1 pole, but he followed it up with another just two races later. He crucially held the lead at the start and was hardly shown on the world-feed broadcast, such was his dominance.
It was a strategically challenging race that featured multiple pit stops (a rarity these days) and a safety car, but Piastri was imperious. His final winning margin was 15.5 seconds.

The victory sees the Australian overtake Max Verstappen for second place in the championship. He’s only three points behind teammate Lando Norris.
Since his costly error in his home race, Piastri has picked up 72 points from a possible 83. He’s the driver making the most of a dominant McLaren car right now.
Oscar Piastri overtakes Ayrton Senna in all-time McLaren points list
Piastri’s 25-point haul at the Bahrain Grand Prix elevated him to fourth on the all-time McLaren list. Only Norris, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have scored more for the iconic British team.
Piastri overtook the legendary duo of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna in Sakhir. But there wasn’t any acknowledgement of this feat.
McLaren’s official social media channels have made no mention of the achievement, nor have any major accounts covering the sport.
RANK | DRIVER | RACES | PTS |
1 | Lando Norris | 132 | 1,084 |
2 | Lewis Hamilton | 110 | 913 |
3 | Jenson Button | 136 | 908 |
4 | Oscar Piastri | 50 | 463 |
5 | Alain Prost | 107 | 458.5 |
6 | Ayrton Senna | 96 | 451 |
7 | David Coulthard | 150 | 412 |
8 | Mika Hakkinen | 131 | 407 |
9 | Kimi Raikkonen | 87 | 337 |
10 | Fernando Alonso | 94 | 241 |
Perhaps this is because points leaderboards are controversial. In 2010, the volume of points on offer increased considerably.
During Senna’s career, a victory was worth either nine or 10, which is the equivalent to a P5 in modern F1. That’s why Piastri is ahead, even though the Brazilian won three championships for McLaren.
Bahrain Grand Prix victory saw Oscar Piastri leapfrog Fernando Alonso too
McLaren were called ‘pathetic’ by F1 fans when they celebrated Norris’ ascent to the top of the table last year. That may be part of the reason they didn’t post about Piastri this time.
More significantly, perhaps, the 24-year-old tied Fernando Alonso’s win tally at McLaren (four) and passed him for total podiums (13). He’s done this in just 50 Grands Prix.
Of course, what really matters to both current drivers is the world title. Hamilton remains McLaren’s most recent drivers’ champion.
Martin Brundle compared to Piastri to Prost given his supreme composure. That may be his most important attribute as he battles for the biggest prize for the first time.
