Race our Writers! – Should F1 Fantasy players be avoiding Alonso at Miami?

Fernando Alonso is the fifth-most selected driver currently in the F1 Fantasy game but at the same time he is the lowest point scorer of the season to date.

A tricky first five races for Aston Martin means Alonso’s team-mate Lance Stroll is only the 18th most popular driver in the game, while the team itself makes the cut in just 14% of selections.

Alonso’s reputation, though, is clearly keeping him in among the firm favourites, given he is one of only four drivers to currently sit on negative points (-20), and has seen his value drop by $2.6million after just a handful of grands prix.

Despite those statistics, the 43-year-old retains the faith of a huge 31% of players, with Isack Hadjar, Oliver Bearman, Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri the only drivers proving more popular at the moment.

Do you have Alonso and are considering dropping him? Or does his drop in value make him more of an appealing signing as you pick your team for Miami? What other decisions need to be factored in as you Race our Writers in our featured Motorsport.com league?

Here, high-flying Hannah Newman and the ever-improving Ed Hardy explain their own selections for the weekend, which also sees the second sprint race of 2025 take place.

Hannah Newman, writer, Autosport, Bortolet’s Go!: “Last time out in Saudi Arabia, Piastri and McLaren proved good additions to my team, so I’ve kept them where they are. I’m also keeping Willliams as my second constructor given a positive upturn in performance for Sainz, and Alex Albon’s promising results so far.

“I’ve still kept Albon over Sainz, however, as I think Albon’s consistency this year has been really impressive and might still just give him the edge.

“I had some funds to spare, so I’ve switched Nico Hulkenberg out for Alonso in the hopes that the Aston Martin driver can improve on his 11th-placed finish in Saudi Arabia for his first points finish of the season.”

Ed Hardy, news editor, Autosport, Novorapid Racing: “I’ve had a bit of a ‘Chumbawumba’ – when I get knocked down, I get back up again – in recent weeks, after a very poor start to the season.

“My strongest points scoring weekends came across the triple header, having made extensive changes to my team ahead of Japan. I cut my losses with Ferrari and replaced the Italian outfit with McLaren, out went Alpine for Racing Bulls, likewise with Yuki Tsunoda for Hadjar. To put the cherry on top of the cake, I’ve had Piastri as my captain all season and with the Aussie appearing the favourite for the F1 title, what an asset he is – much cheaper than his team-mate, too!

“So, for those reasons alone, the best way to carry my momentum is to keep an unchanged line-up for Miami, especially when it’s a good cost-saving tactic for later in the year. Why change a winning formula? Novorapid Racing, named in honour of the insulin brand being a type one diabetic myself, is on the rise and unlike Norris last year, I shall make something of this late upturn in form…I probs won’t!”
