Ted Kravitz shares what he expects Andrea Stella to say to Lando Norris after Canadian Grand Prix crash

Zak Brown warned about his McLaren drivers coming together during the 2025 Formula 1 season as they battle for the championship. His nightmare came true at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Team principal Andrea Stella could only watch as Lando Norris collided with Oscar Piastri in the closing stages of the race. The accident was reminiscent of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button’s crash in 2011.

Norris was looking to work his way through the field after only managing P7 in qualifying. But the McLarens struggled to keep up with the frontrunners on the dirty Montreal circuit as they ran fourth and fifth in the final few laps.

The Brit was quicker than Piastri and looked to overtake his McLaren teammate. But on lap 67, he hit the back of the Aussie’s rear left tyre and slammed into the wall.

Norris immediately accepted responsibility for the accident and apologised to Piastri in the media pen. He was handed a five-second time penalty, but that did no further damage as the 25-year-old was forced to retire from the Canadian GP.

Norris has subsequently lost 10 points in his bid to win the 2025 title. Now 22 points behind Piastri in the standings, he has a mountain to climb to recover his title chances.

Ted Kravitz expects Andrea Stella to tell Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to give each other ‘more racing room’

Interestingly, Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur felt McLaren’s crash was ‘good for the fans’, as such drama will help attract a new audience. But a lot of debate has been sparked about the Woking outfit’s team orders.

Piastri and Norris have been given the freedom to fight each other on track in 2025, but Canada proved that they can overstep the boundaries. Nico Rosberg says Stella must talk to Norris after the incident, with Ted Kravitz detailing what he expects the boss to tell his driver.

“I think what Andrea Stella means when he says: ‘We’re going to have a discussion about it’, is: ‘OK, what was the point of pushing it too hard?’ said Kravitz via The F1 Show.

“Was the intention just that Lando, after winning Monaco, but then not winning Spain, wanted to make a point about the championship to Oscar, and thought, even though it was fourth place, I need to have this off you’.

“Well, there is just racing, I mean obviously it was just racing. And then I think the outcome which is going to be that Stella, who is not a man to be crossed, Andrea Stella, or a man to annoy.

“[Is going to say]: ‘I think we need to give each other a bit more racing room and I suppose the only positive you can say about it is that better they were fighting over fourth and fifth and it was only 10 points lost for Lando, could have been many more for Oscar.

“Better now, than if they were fighting over first and second. I think then we’d have a bit more of a thing on our hands.”

Has Lando Norris blown his chance to win the 2025 championship?

With Piastri finishing the race in fourth, the Aussie now has almost a race win’s worth of points at the top of the standings. It is another damaging blow to his teammate’s title chances.

Rosberg says Piastri is now the title favourite after Norris’ first DNF of the season. The Aussie has stepped up in 2025 as he has the advantage in qualifying and in his racecraft, and it is beginning to affect his teammate’s morale.

McLaren are worried about Norris after his engineer told him to ‘reset his mental state’, says Rosberg. The 2016 F1 champion thinks the Brit’s pit wall is acting like a psychologist to calm him down and keep his head in the right place.

Despite the pressure on his shoulders, Jacques Villeneuve thinks being the underdog will ‘help’ Norris. He is now the hunter in the title fight and can battle Piastri for the championship if he can stay in the right mental state.
