What Mark Webber has privately said about Oscar Piastri’s post-race behaviour proves he’s a future F1 champion

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri missed out on a podium finish for only the second time this year at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri started the Canadian Grand Prix from third place on the grid but failed to hold onto that position.

Piastri made an error losing a position to Max Verstappen at Imola that cost him victory and in Montreal, it was Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli that took advantage.

After dropping down to fourth, Piastri bided his time trying to get the position back from the young Italian.

It was only during the final stint of the race that he managed to close the gap to Antonelli, but the McLaren driver had another issue to deal with.

Lando Norris didn’t perform in qualifying but on the alternative strategy, he was suddenly challenging Piastri during the closing stages.

Unfortunately for McLaren, the pair came to blows, and Damon Hill commented that Norris’ crash was ‘disappointing’ for the conclusion of what was turning out to be a thrilling conclusion.

Piastri was able to continue despite the collision and would have been grateful to secure 12 points and extend his lead in the drivers’ championship.

He’s still got a long way to go before he secures his maiden title, but Nico Rosberg has shared what his manager Mark Webber has told him about Piastri’s conduct that shows why he’s ready to add his name to F1’s list of champions.

Danica Patrick and Rosberg were reflecting on the Canadian Grand Prix for Sky Sports F1 (15/6 9:52 pm) and Piastri extending his lead in the drivers’ championship.

Patrick said: “I don’t think he talks about mistakes too much.

“He did clip the wall on the exit of the last chicane in practice, and there are some drivers that speak to the mistakes that they make and the things that they wish that they could have done better and what they did wrong.

“Thoughts become things and you have to focus on the positives and I think Oscar does a really good job of that.”

Rosberg replied: “I spoke to Mark Webber, who used to be my ex-teammate at Williams who’s now Oscar’s manager.

“He also said that whether he finishes first or fifth, in the evening, it’s just having a pizza and it’s the same state of mind.

“Of course, there’s some nice excitement after the race, but then it’s done and we move on.

“He’s just super, incredibly solid.”

Rosberg shared that Piastri is now his overwhelming favourite to win the championship this year, although given the F1 season still hasn’t reached the halfway mark yet, there’s still plenty that can change over the next 14 Grand Prix weekends.

Red Bull and Mercedes would like to think that Verstappen and Russell aren’t out of the equation yet.

However, if it does come down to a showdown between McLaren’s drivers, Piastri has the advantage right now.

Even when he’s not racing at his very highest level, Piastri avoids making critical errors that can derail his entire weekend.

He struggled throughout practice in Monaco and Canada, but still managed to secure a podium on the streets of Monte Carlo and while he wouldn’t have anticipated Norris running into the back of him, was on course to extend his advantage on Sunday anyway.

Piastri always comes across as a character who doesn’t get too high or too low no matter what’s happening on track.

That level of concentration is only going to serve him well as he looks to become the latest driver to become a Formula 1 world champion.
