Why George Russell was spotted standing on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix podium despite finishing fifth

Mercedes ended their 2024 season with some late drama when Lewis Hamilton closed a 14 second gap on George Russell and clinched fourth place.

Hamilton had to recover from P16 on the grid after exiting qualifying early, after Mercedes made a mistake by running him late in the session.

Toto Wolff was spotted ‘yelling’ at Andrew Shovlin for the mistake, having been in charge of the run plan for Mercedes in the qualifying session.

Hamilton, who is known for his ability to make it through the field, managed to get as high as fifth after extending his first stint before closing a 14-second gap to Russell in the final laps. The pair went wheel-to-wheel in the final corners, with Hamilton coming out on top.

Despite missing out on a top three finish, Russell was still spotted standing on the podium alongside Charles Leclerc in photos seen after the race.

George Russell filming for F1 hollywood movie in Abu Dhabi

Russell was spotted taking up the P2 spot on the podium after the race as part of filming for the F1 movie that will premiere next year.

The Mercedes driver was joined by Leclerc and hollywood actor Brad Pitt, who was also filming a sequence for the movie in character as Sonny Hayes.

Pitt and co-star Damson Idris were on the grid during the national anthem as part of filming, with the APX GP cars also taking to the track in between sessions.

Russell also played an important role in the filming at the Qatar GP, with crew members working on his onboard camera’s prior to the race to help film sequences in the race.

It is set to be a blockbuster affair for F1, with it also being the first official film for the championship in its history after several attempts to make one over the years.
