Will Buxton has given an update on his future in the popular Netflix Drive to Survive series after his F1 TV exit.
After the docuseries was first released in 2019, Buxton quickly became a fan favourite for his light-hearted narration and insight into the sport. Although he became the butt of some of the most popular Formula 1 memes, Buxton was instrumental in explaining the ins and outs of the sport to a new wave of fans.
Since then, the pundit has been a constant for Drive to Survive fans. However, with his new role with FOX Sports as lead commentator for IndyCar, it is unclear whether Buxton will continue to appear in the Netflix series beyond the seventh season. During an interview with The Independent, Buxton confirmed that although he hasn’t currently got clarity on his future, he hopes to continue in the role. He explained:
“To be honest with you, I don’t know.
“They’ve always been very careful not to show me in situ in the paddock, I’ve always just been a talking head in a room.
“So, I guess that could continue [with me] if they wanted to. I actually really hope we can, that would be lovely.
“I’m not just going to walk out of the F1 paddock and suddenly not talk to everybody that I have worked with. I’ll be back throughout the year, not on a TV screen with F1, but I’ll be going to some races.
“The fun part for me this year, ahead one of the most exciting F1 seasons in a long time, is I get to enjoy this one as a fan. That’s really exciting for me.”

This comes ahead of the release of Drive to Survive Series 7, which is set to be available on Netflix from March 7. The upcoming series will cover the dramatic 2024 F1 season and is set to feature some of the biggest storylines from last year, including Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes exit, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen’s championship battle, and Sergio Perez’s Red Bull exit.
Joining Buxton in more recent seasons of Drive to Survive have been former Williams team principal Claire Williams and former NASCAR and IndyCar driver-turned-presenter Danica Patrick.
Buxton has been in the motorsport journalism world for over two decades, starting as a writer for F1 Magazine and later stepping up as the director of communications for the GP2 championship, now known as F2. His experience spans from being a pit reporter on SPEED Channel to becoming a lead presenter on F1 TV. Announcing his move to IndyCar coverage, Buxton posted in January 2025:
“I’m so grateful to FOX for this once in a lifetime opportunity, so thankful to everyone at the NTT Indycar Series for the warm welcome they’ve already extended, and so invigorated for the years ahead. Indycar stands at the gates of one of the most exciting and important periods in its history.
“Alongside Hinch, Townsend and the world class team behind the scenes at FOX, I can’t wait to get started and to present to you all, the fastest racing on earth.”
